Involved Welding CNC Wood Working
Metal x Wood
Size: 10 X 10"
Steel City's Guiding Light
Compass x Bethlehem Star
A memento to Lehigh University's interdisciplinary approach to education.
This project merges the design of the iconic Bethlehem Star
(a symbol of Lehigh and it's neighboring community) and the symbolism of a Compass.
The design brief was to visualize the "direction" Lehigh wants to move in by investing in interdisciplinary programs.
I did this by merging the geometry of a compass with that of the Bethlehem star
& utilizing all the different maker spaces Lehigh had to offer.

and the Electronics Lab in Wilbur Powerhouse.

Black locust & birch slabs

Clamped and glued

Mounting holes drilled out and nuts inset

Edges routed out
Tung oil applied to deepen contrast

Pencil rod cut, welded, and polished.

Sheet metal and pencil rod frame welded
lights soldered and attached.

The purpose of this piece was to showcase the University's ability combine metalworking, electronics, and woodworking techniques.
Cohesion between the waterjet cut and bent metal, welded pencil rod, band-sawed and routed wood components, and integrated LEDs was essential.
